Former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen may already leave Barcelona as a free agent if they can’t get him signed up with La Liga in time for their opening game of the 2022-23 campaign. A move which could have an impact on the Wesley Fofana talks.
Since the Danish centre-half announced that he was to leave Stamford Bridge after five years in SW6 back in early July, Barcelona was always viewed as his dream destination for a career alteration. The 26-year-old has featured heavily in Barca’s pre-season tour of the United States alongside other new recruits, Jules Kounde, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, but all are currently not eligible for the weekend’s opener against Rayo Vallecano.
This is because La Liga continues to reject Barcelona’s applications to register their new recruits because of the dire situation that the club find itself in. In order to solve this, rumour has it that Blues targets Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have to be sold to generate funds and, more importantly, space on the wage bill.
However, a few of the new recruits are already becoming impatient with the situation. ESPN reports that Chelsea’s former number 4 and Franck Kessie could leave the Spanish club only a few months after joining as free agents.
Christensen, who departed Chelsea on good terms, could theoretically make a shock return to West London if the Blues boards were able to agree a new contract with the defender in question.
Potentially this could be an operation for new owner Todd Boehly to save money in a position and focus the spending in midfield and attack.
With De Jong, Aubameyang and other attackers like Wilfried Zaha set to demand sizeable fees from respective clubs, a free agent signing of Christensen would mean that Fofana may not be necessarily worth the world-record bid punt that is being mentioned.
Perhaps, allowing the 21-year-old to stay put for one more summer at the King Power Stadium will mean they can get him cheaper next summer, especially as Leicester have a gentleman’s agreement that they will seriously listen to offers from across Europe in 2023.
Chelsea fans- If Christensen could come back to West London, would you bring him back if it meant potentially shelving the Wesley Fofana plans for another summer? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below!
