With less than two weeks to the general elections, more troubles seem to have been brewing for the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as top members of the party in Akwa Ibom state defected to All Progressive Congress APC.
The Nation reports that on Tuesday, February 8, another top aide to Governor Udom Emmanuel on project, Utibe Ibanga defected from PDP with many supporters including the chairman of Ikot Ekpene council, David Umana. They joined APC during its campaign rally at the Ikot Ekpene township stadium.
Reacting to his defection, Ibanga, who was a special assistant on project monitoring to Governor Udom, said he left the party because of the governor’s lack of interest in the welfare of his aides.
It would be recalled that earlier before Ibanga’s defection, two commissioners namely, Victor Antai and Ibanga Akpabio, also resigned and defected to the APC.
Others who defected are: Mfon Udeme, the special assistant on electoral matters; Joe Iniodu a special assistant on media); Idorenyin Esikot, a special assistant on small & medium scale enterprises; Anthony Usoro, the senior special assistant on demographic planning; Godswill Ekpenyong, the special assistant on projects and Derek Tower Umoh, the special assistant on projects. Addressing the rally, Udofia said he was mandated to defect with over 1,000 PDP members by the ”spirit”
“The spirit led me to leave. We have been offered the best as Akwa Ibom people through the candidacy of Obong Nsima Ekere and we have no option than to join that team in order to get the best.”
Another defector declared: “With my entry into APC today, PDP has finally collapsed in Uruan.” Ibanga’s defection came barely a day after two former local government chairmen, Ukana Udofia (Ibesikpo Asutan) and Eventus Edem (Uruan) and a former supervisor in Ibesikpo Asutan local govermment, Usukoson Etim (Inim), left PDP during the APC campaign rally in Ibesikpo Asutan.
