Manchester United booked their place in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup as they overcame League Two side Colchester 3-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.
The hosts made a bright start to the game and looked to test Colchester goalkeeper Dean Gerken early on. The League Two side sat deep and looked to soak up pressure.
Midway through the first period, Marcus Rashford squandered a great opportunity for his side. A pass was floated over the away team’s defence, allowing the Englishman to run onto it, but he failed to bring the ball under control and saw it bounce out of play.
The ball continued to come back at Colchester and Anthony Martial came close just before the break, with his shot from outside the area going just over the bar. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men found a way through five minutes into the second period, however, with Rashford firing in following a quick counter-attack.
The hosts doubled their lead just five minutes later, Ryan Jackson turning a delightful Mason Greenwood cross into his own net. And it didn’t take the Red Devils long to add a third, with Martial getting on the scoresheet with half an hour remaining. United could have added to their lead, but it finished 3-0.
